The Addiction (non-canon name) is the main antagonist and the final boss in Afraid of Monsters: Director's Cut. You face him in the final map, known in the files as 4mother. This boss does not appear in the original Afraid of Monsters.

Appearance[]

ADDICTION The Addiction is a monstrous version of David Leatherhoff with grey skin, blacked out eyes, and distorted features. It has blood splattered on his face and a large gaping hole in it’s chest which it retrieves the Axe from in combat. The Addiction constantly shakes and jitters and, when not wielding the axe, keeps it’s arms stiffly hugging it’s chest in a pose possibly meant to be reminiscent of a corpse.

Background[]

After unlocking the door with the completed code (which spells out FORGIVE ME) David discovers a twisted version of the Markland Hospital, consisting of hallways set up in various angles. Climbing his way through, he goes through another nightmare zone, where he finds a house with a painting showing him how to escape. On the table, there is a note saying: "My mother used to point at things she wanted me to destroy", and the painting shows a shadow-like creature (presumably mother) pointing at the ceiling. David breaks a hole in the ceiling and climbs into an old attic. There's a note on the floor, saying: "Now she is pointing at your enemy". A Twitcher breaks into the room, only for David to kill it. Entering the hallway, he comes across a mirror, with another note saying: "No, not the innocent. The enemy!"

Reading this, David sees a twisted version of himself forming in the mirror. The Addiction comes out of the mirror, and David raises his weapon only to damage himself upon shooting his own disfigured reflection. David, realizing that he can't fight what is basically himself, runs for his life, as the doppelgänger stalks slowly after him. After a short chase through a bleeding wooden hallway, David falls into a well, and upon getting out of the water, he finds the Addiction waiting for him in another mirror. David finds a Spear on a table next to him, grabs it, and quickly finds it to be the only weapon capable of harming the monster. After a long, tense fight, David finally kills the Addiction, causing it to collapse and allowing him to escape his nightmare at last.

Tactics[]

Fight the Addiction

The Addiction as he appears in 4mother.

  • The Addiction is immune to every type of damage you can deal. Handguns, shotguns, rifles and other weapons won't work and, in fact, they'll damage the real David instead. The only weapon that actually damages the Addiction is the Spear.
  • Every once in a while, the Addiction will pull out an Axe from its chest, and will proceed to stalk towards David to attack him with an overhead strike. After enough damage to The Addiction has been inflicted, it will hide the Axe in it's chest again.
  • The Addiction is capable of striking David with a thunderbolt. Listening for the initial rumble and then jumping just before the bolt strikes will ensure it misses.
  • When its health is low enough, The Addiction will ignite itself, damaging David unless he dives back into the water and waits until the flames go out.

The "Intimidated by Abnormalities" Poster

  • The Addiction is the embodiment of David's own addiction caused by the pills. His nightmarish and corpse-like form is possibly a metaphor for death, either from an overdose or a life of drug use, where his existence represents the need for David to take the pills.
  • The Addiction appears as an Easter Egg in Cry of Fear. In the subway segment, you can see several posters for a fictional movie called "Intimidated by Abnormalities" made by the creators of Cry of Fear, featuring Enrique Iglesias and David Leatherhaven. This is just a play on words for Afraid of Monsters.
  • The Addiction makes a comeback as the final boss in Cry of Fear's custom campaign "Halloween Collab" and its sound files were present since the earliest release.
