The Handcrab (non-canonical name) is a frequent enemy in both Afraid of Monsters and Afraid of Monsters: Director's Cut. Handcrabs are one of the earlier and weaker monsters encountered in the game.

Appearance[]

In the original Afraid of Monsters, the monster it a small beige four legged creature that has seemingly been decapitated. It's forearms are long and blood covered and it's body has multiple pins stuck in it as well as bloody wounds from areas previously stuck with pins.
The Director's Cut is where the monster get's it's popular name 'handcrab' from. It is a rotting disembodied head with a hand reaching out from the mouth. The eyes of the head are missing and leaking an unkown black substance. The hand is the only part of the monster that moves, possibly implying the head is not actually part of it's body.

Tactics[]

  • The Handcrab launches at the player hand-first and does minimal damage.
  • After landing, it has a short cooldown before it can jump again.
  • If it landed behind the player, it will take a short time to turn towards the player and then jump again.
  • The Handcrabs are mostly encountered in vents and smaller rooms, due to their small size and agility.
  • Melee weapons or shots from the P228 are the best way to dispatch of these enemies quickly.
  • When idling, it emits a long gurgling noise, which can be used to identify it before making sight contact.

Trivia[]

  • The handcrab is a modification of the Headcrab, an enemy from the original Half-Life.
  • In the Director's Cut the textures used for the monster are heavily modified versions of Half-Life textures. The head uses one of the game's scientist head textures, and the hand comes from one of The G-Man's textures
  • The Handcrab gets progressively stronger throughout the game, being able to take more melee hits than before. This is because the player finds two stronger melee weapons as the story progresses.
  • It could be found in Cry Of Fear once, in a special room during the Sick Subway level as an easter egg in reference to the popular YouTuber PewDiePie. However, it was removed along with the room in later updates.
